Colocasia Royal Hawaiian ‘Blue Hawaii’ is a striking tropical statement plant, prized for its dramatic foliage and rich coloration. This exceptional elephant ear typically reaches 36 inches tall, with the potential to grow up to 50 inches in ideal conditions.

Its large, heart-shaped leaves are a sophisticated matte green, highlighted by bold bluish-purple veins and softly undulating purple margins. As the plant matures, it develops semi-glossy burgundy stems, adding depth and contrast to its architectural form. While it may occasionally produce yellow-green flowers, the true beauty of ‘Blue Hawaii’ lies in its foliage.

A Colocasia esculenta (commonly known as elephant ear or taro), this tuberous, frost-sensitive perennial thrives in USDA Zones 8–12. It has a tidy, upright, clumping habit, making it an excellent choice for containers, patios, pond edges, rain gardens, or bold landscape plantings. It can also be grown indoors in a bright, sunny location.

Once established, ‘Blue Hawaii’ is surprisingly low-maintenance, provided it is kept consistently moist. It performs best in full sun to part shade and prefers rich, fertile soil that ranges from moist to wet. In regions with intense summer heat, light afternoon shade helps reduce stress and maintain leaf quality. Deer tend to avoid this plant, making it a reliable option for low-maintenance gardens.

Planting & Care

• Light: Full sun to part shade

• Water: Consistently moist; do not allow to dry out

• Soil: Clay, loamy, or normal soils; well-drained to wet

• Planting Depth: 2–4 inches

• Spacing: 18–24 inches apart

• Planting Time: Mid-spring, once soil and air temperatures exceed 60°F

In colder climates, lift bulbs in fall and store in a cool, dry location where temperatures remain above 45°F.

• For a concern about no growth we will not issue replacements any sooner than 10 weeks after bulbs have been planted in appropriate conditions and temperatures. We use discretion when returning items for no growth.
• Please understand that we cannot accept responsibility for the results of extreme weather, neglect, unforeseeable acts of nature, or ignoring our hardiness zone recommendation.
• We do not refund items that are seized or destroyed or lost due to customs. There will be no exceptions to this policy.
• We will not refund orders when the delivery status is not updated to delivered. NO exceptions.
